You know the feeling -you’ve made it to bed in reasonable time. You’ve got a busy day tomorrow and need your beauty sleep. You get to sleep in good time, but then, around 2am you’re wide awake and find yourself staring at the ceiling with a million things running around your mind. No matter what you do, you can’t seem to drop off to sleep again!
Since beginning yoga health coaching, this is the most common health complaint I hear about. More people than ever have an expectation that they won’t get a good night’s sleep. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Last week I wrote about some tactics to employ to ensure you’re able to fall asleep. This week to want to suggest a simple technique to use if you find yourself awake part way through the night. Quite a number of my clients have tried this with a lot of success. It’s simple and very much like counting sheep. If you’re doing that and it works, keep using that one. However, I find the following a dependable way to fall asleep, no matter what crazy things are running around your mind.
Try counting backwards from 100, while deliberately breathing:
- inhale 100, exhale 99, inhale 98, exhale 97…..and so on.
There are only a couple of guidelines to make this work:
1. If you lose count or forget which number comes next start at 100 again.
2. If you make it to 1, start again at 100.
